Finisar Corporation, Baylor Scott & White, and Grayson College Receive Job-Training Grants Totaling $871,501

AUSTIN ⎯ The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has awarded Grayson College and Finisar Corporation a $566,261 Skills Development Fund grant. The grant will be used to provide customized training to 235 new and incumbent workers for industry-related topics with focused training that includes project management, wafer fabrication, cleanroom chemical and equipment safety, and Excel.

 “Congratulations to Grayson College in partnership with Finisar and Baylor Scott & White for creating these public-private partnerships to provide training and employment opportunities in high-demand industries that support Texas’ continued success as a global economic leader." said TWC Chair Ruth R. Hughs. "These two individual grants will focus on specialized training in the areas of information technology, and healthcare which will create or upgrade a total of more than 406 jobs in the North Texas region."

In addition, Baylor Scott & White has partnered with Grayson College for a $305,240 Skills Development Fund grant. The grant will be used to provide customized training to 171 new and incumbent workers for industry-related topics with focused training that will allow the college to build capacity to provide instruction of quality assurance standards for patient care, workers’ compensation processes, and breath alcohol technician certification. Trainees will include dietary managers, post-anesthesia nurses, emergency nurses, and other related fields.

Since its inception in 1996, the Skills Development Fund grants have created or upgraded more than 342,428 jobs throughout Texas. The grants have assisted 4,238 employers with their customized training needs. The Legislature allocated $48.5 million to the Skills Development Fund for the 2016-17 biennium.
